Michael Burroughs Therapist

My Approach

I’ve found that the most effective counseling takes a team approach: I am knowledgeable about mental health treatment, but you are the expert on you.

We’ll explore your concern together to find a solution you are comfortable with.

Services

I provide individual therapy to adults 18 and older, via a HIPAA compliant virtual link.

I help people address various issues, including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, grief, family/relationship dynamics, and major life changes.

I am an ally for those who identify as a member of the LGBTQ community.

I am an ally for those who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or Person of Color.

I do not work with children or couples, and I do not prescribe medication, but I can connect you with someone in the community who can help with those needs.

Background

I have been working in the field of mental health and substance abuse treatment since 1995. I received my Master’s degree in 1999.

I have provided as well as supervised treatment via individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and marital therapy. I worked extensively with both children and adults in a variety of settings both inpatient and outpatient, and every level of care in between. This includes work in crisis centers, drug treatment centers, and psychiatric hospitals. I’ve led teams that provide intensive, community-based treatment for individuals suffering from severe mental illness.

In 2003 and 2004, my wife and I served in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua, working with children struggling with homelessness and substance abuse.

Before opening my own private practice in 2021, I worked for the State of North Carolina for 9 years, in ‘Utilization Management’, ensuring that Medicaid recipients received appropriate treatment based on nationally recognized clinical guidelines.

With over 6 years of volunteer experience in political advocacy work at the local, state, and federal level, I also bring a unique perspective on how current sociopolitical realities can affect one’s mental health and also how one can thrive in such an environment.

I enjoy travel, hiking, music, and reading.
